
Born in Grulich in 1904, Austria-Hungary (today Czechoslovakia), dead in 1983 in Zurich, Switzerland. Graphic designer, typographer, author, painter, teacher.
1919-1922: trains at Orell Füssli AG in Zurich.
1928-1929: copywriter for the Max Dalang advertising agency in Zurich.
1930-1931: freelance designer. Works with Max Bill, Herbert Matter and Anton Stankowski, among others.
1932-1936: advertising manager for the Jean Haecki Import in Basle.
1933-1937: editor of “Industriewerbung” magazine in Basle.
1936: starts freelance graphic work in Zurich. Clients include the Mustermesse Basle and the International Red Cross.
1952-1953: editor of “Camera” magazine.
1958-1965: co-founder and co-edtor of “Neue Grafik” magazine with Richard Paul Lohse, joseph Müller-Brockmann and carlo vivarelli.
1962-1964: director of the Gewerbemuseum in Winterhur.
1963: teaches at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm and in 1971 at Carlton University, School of Industrial Design in Ottawa, Canada.
